The last word Prim ever spoke was Katniss' name - a fact which totally made me bawl like a baby when reading it. Another explosion followed, killing Prim and other medics and also burning Katniss pretty badly. After one particularly bad explosion, Prim ran into the crowd to help an injured child. After all, it was Coin and the rebels of District 13 that had been bombing Capitol children in hopes of convincing Panem that President Snow was the one responsible for the horrific acts. Later, after Katniss headed to the Capitol in order to end the war once and for all, it's revealed that Prim has also been allowed to go as a medic despite her young age on President Coin's orders. While living in the safety of Compartment E for much of the book, Prim put into practice her informal nurse training as she helped to heal the injured in the war. In the beginning of Mockingjay the book, Prim really showed her maturity and impressed Katniss by how much she'd grown up in such a short amount of time. Before you read any further, I should warn you that there are serious spoilers for the end of Mockingjay ahead! But what was Prim even doing in the Capitol in the first place? If it's been a long time since you've read Suzanne Collins' novels and you're hitting up Mockingjay Part 2 this weekend, you might need a refresher. Katniss was so destroyed by Prim's death that she lost her voice for several days after, and the haunting memory of seeing her little sister's final moments before she was killed by an explosion likely stayed with her forever. Plus, she was the apple of Katniss' eye and one of the main reasons she had the strength to continue fighting the good fight even when it seemed like the battle was all but lost and nothing felt worth it. After all, she was not even 14 years old and had so much potential.

If Snow knew of this and decided to replicate Gale's ploy, then it was he who caused a domino effect on Katniss' internal state that ended with her assassinating President Coin instead of Snow.One of the most heartbreaking moments in the entire Hunger Games series has to be when Prim dies on the streets of the Capitol. Katniss was already questioning why Prim was there as a medic in the first place sending a child into the heat of a coup does not seem like the wisest choice, and Katniss' prior contention with District 13 leader President Coin could have factored into Prim being put in that situation. On the other hand, Snow likely knew of Katniss' distrust of the leaders of the rebel movement, and it would have been a masterful move on his part to frame the rebels as being responsible for her sister's death. Of course, Snow was a ruthless villain and could have been lying to further harm Katniss' psyche, but both parties agreed not to lie to each other in the past, and Snow would have had little reason to break that promise after his defeat. Likewise, the bombs were dropped on a crowd of Capitol children, so it seems unlikely President Snow would needlessly kill children of his own people even he admitted to Katniss that, though he was not above killing children, he didn't take life wastefully.
While Katniss wanted to believe it was the Capitol's hand at work, given the fact the hovercraft used to drop the bombs had the Capitol's insignia on it, the nature of the bomb was so exact to the one Gale designed, it's nearly impossible to rationalize it not being his handiwork. Since the possibility of Gale being responsible for Prim's death was discovered, fans have been divided on if he was truly at fault for Prim's fate.
Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life. Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. The root of Katniss' unraveling was the knowledge of how evil and ruthless humanity could be, and seeing that depravity extend to herself and her loved ones drove wedges in nearly all of her relationships. Mockingjay centered heavily around Katniss' mental state as she tried to figure out who she could and could not trust within her inner circle, compounded by the fact that the Capitol had brainwashed Peeta to want to kill her.
